The hotel under construction in Debrecen city centre reaches its highest point

Bajcsy Invest Kft., a project company of the Szinorg Group — which also includes Hunép — is building a four-star business hotel in the centre of Debrecen. The foundation stone was laid on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca in June, and the city's first hotel operating under a major international brand is due to open its doors next summer.

On Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca, 155 rooms and apartments in total are being created across the four residential floors above entrance level. The hotel will also have a 120-seat restaurant and a conference room of the same capacity, and guests will be able to park in the underground car park.

On Tuesday 5 October, Gyula Szűcs, Chairman and CEO of Szinorg Universal Zrt., announced that the foundation stone had been laid 106 days earlier and that the building had now reached its highest point. A topping-out ceremony was held to mark the occasion. Gyula Szűcs said more time would be needed between now and the next celebration than had passed between the foundation stone and the topping out. He said they hope to open Debrecen's first Mercure hotel, operating under an international brand, at a large event in the second half of July.

Mayor László Papp spoke of a strong autumn ahead for Debrecen in tourism terms.

– In terms of its economy, the city is living through a period in which there is no sector that is not growing, developing and generating new jobs. Tourism is one of the fastest-growing parts of the Debrecen economy – the mayor said.

He added that Debrecen's hotels are fully booked this weekend too. The summer figures show that the number of guest nights rose by more than 11 per cent on last season. International air travel is expected to regain momentum in the coming period, and Debrecen will be able to take its share — which is why developments of this kind are needed.

László Papp emphasised that the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca establishment is a business hotel, not a wellness one.

– A measure of a city's development is what buildings are created and what property developments are delivered. Debrecen performs well in that respect. Whether industrial parks, educational institutions or tourism developments, the buildings created in Debrecen are landmarks of real significance – the mayor explained.

He said another very important merit of the hotel is that it brings the first major international brand to the city.
