Sustainable building materials were used during construction, smart energy systems are in place, waste generation is reduced in operation, and environmentally sound initiatives are supported. Sustainability has become an integral part of how we operate, without any need to give up business results. One of the clearest proofs of that commitment is that the Mercure Debrecen was the first hotel outside Budapest to obtain the internationally recognised BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification in the Excellent category, which also confirms the building's environmentally conscious and energy-efficient design. It thus became the first non-Budapest hotel in Hungary to receive this prestigious recognition.
BREEAM is a sustainability assessment scheme developed in the United Kingdom. Its purpose is to track and reduce the environmental impact of buildings across their life cycle, to provide buildings with a credible environmental label, to make the environmental benefits of buildings visible, and to stimulate demand for sustainable buildings, construction products and supply chains in the interest of creating value.
Assessment covers nine categories plus innovation. Each addresses the most influential factors, including low-carbon design; durability and resilience of design; adaptation to climate change; and the protection of ecological value and biodiversity. The certification is recognised both internationally and in Hungary, which is why it is currently among the most widely used.
The SZINORG group is committed to sustainability and environmental protection, and we support a number of greening initiatives. We believe a company must strive not only for commercial success but must take responsibility for the community and the environment in which it operates. Harmonious coexistence between an industrial environment and nature is not only possible but necessary.
The Mercure Debrecen is currently the highest-scoring BREEAM certified hotel building in Hungary. Reaching the Excellent level is in itself unusual: only two hotels in Hungary have achieved such a rating under this framework. Holding BREEAM certification means we meet demanding environmental performance standards, ensuring our hotel offers guests a green and welcoming environment while we keep our ecological footprint to a minimum.
