Sensirion invests billions of forints in its Debrecen production plant

Sensirion — the globally recognised manufacturer of digital microsensors and systems — is expanding its Debrecen plant with a further five thousand square metre production hall, an investment delivered in cooperation with the SZINORG and XANGA groups. Worth HUF 8.5 billion in total and designed with sustainability in mind, the project's foundation stone was laid in early February 2024.

Swiss-based Sensirion, which has operated successfully in Debrecen for several years, based its decision to expand capacity on the positive experience of the past two years and on expected growth in demand for sensor and module solutions.

The company is building the new hall in partnership with two significant Debrecen developers, the SZINORG and XANGA groups. The extension will connect to the existing building and is being designed with sustainability in mind: it will be entirely free of fossil energy sources and will generate a significant part of the energy it uses.

As with the previous plant, construction is financed by the SZINORG and XANGA groups under a build-to-suit arrangement, at a cost of some HUF 4.5 billion. The value of the newly installed machinery reaches HUF 4 billion, financed entirely by Sensirion's Swiss parent company.

Sensirion's first plant building, also five thousand square metres, was built jointly by the SZINORG and XANGA groups and handed over in autumn 2021 in the Debrecen Regional and Innovation Science and Technology Park on Határ út. Built by HUNÉP Zrt., that hall is heated and cooled by geothermal energy, its lighting is LED-based and fitted with presence detection in most areas, and the overwhelming majority of its electricity is generated by solar panels. In 2022 the company was the first to receive the Sustainable Debrecen grand prize.

Sensirion's leadership emphasised that this partnership is key to the company's future, and that close cooperation with the SZINORG and XANGA groups allows it to keep pace with industry change and maintain its leading position in sensor technology. The investment creates further jobs in the Debrecen region and contributes to the local economy.

The first phase of the investment is expected to be complete by the end of the year, the second by the first quarter of 2025. Sensirion looks to the future with confidence and does not intend to stop developing in Debrecen: a further extension of 2,500 square metres is already in preparation.
