Construction began in November 2020, with Accor brought in for hotel management. The hotel welcomes business guests with 135 rooms, 20 apartments, conference rooms, a restaurant, a café and a fitness facility.
The formal opening and ribbon-cutting took place on 21 August 2022. In his opening address, Gyula Szűcs, Chairman and CEO of Szinorg Universal Zrt., said: "We have reached the end of a development that ranks among the most significant in Debrecen, and which for our Group has been the largest to date. We have built a 155-room, four-star superior hotel in the heart of the city…"
Sabina Bartyzel, Accor's regional director for Eastern Europe, was also present. In her address she noted that the group is present in some 110 countries worldwide with 5,300 hotels, of which the Mercure in Debrecen is the 24th in Hungary.
Gergely Gulyás, Minister heading the Prime Minister's Office, called building a hotel during the coronavirus pandemic a bold undertaking — but Hungarian tourism appears to be recovering, with Debrecen playing a prominent part in it.
László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, expressed his pleasure at taking part in a quality hotel opening on a serious scale after 10 to 12 years. He considers progress in hotel development timely, noting that Debrecen's strength is event tourism and emphasising that visitors to international events look for quality accommodation.
